What actually happens during your colour consultation?
If you've ever had your hair coloured before, you've probably had a consultation.
For most salon appointments, it happens once you're in the chair. Your stylist asks a few questions, you talk about what you'd like to have done, perhaps look through a few inspiration photos, and then it's time to get started.
For many appointments, that's absolutely enough. But when you're investing in a bespoke colour that's designed around you, your lifestyle and how you want your hair to feel for the months ahead, I don't believe that kind of conversation should be squeezed into the first five minutes of your appointment.
That's why I treat the consultation as one of the most important parts of the experience.
It isn't a quick list of questions before I mix your colour. It's dedicated time for us to sit down together without feeling rushed, so we can really talk about your hair, what you're hoping to achieve, and what's realistically going to work best for you.
Because beautiful colour doesn't begin with the first foil; it begins with understanding the person sitting in front of me.
One of the first things I'll usually ask isn't, "What colour would you like?"
Instead, I'll simply ask you to tell me about your hair.
That conversation often uncovers so much more than choosing a shade of blonde.
You might tell me you've been having blonde root touch-ups every six weeks for years because that's just what you've always done. Perhaps you've reached the point where you're tired of planning your diary around your roots, but you're worried that changing your routine means giving up the blonde you love.
Or maybe you've collected lots of inspiration photos but can't quite put your finger on what it is you like about them. Sometimes it's not the colour at all. It's the softness, the shine, the way the hair moves, or how effortless it looks.
These are the conversations that really matter because they help me understand not just what you like, but why.
We'll also talk about your lifestyle.
Not because there's a right or wrong answer, but because your colour should work around your life, not the other way round.
How often do you genuinely want to visit the salon?
Would you rather keep everything bright with regular appointments, or would you prefer a softer, lower-maintenance colour that still looks beautiful as it grows?
How much time do you enjoy spending styling your hair at home?
The answers to these questions help me build a colour that's personal to you. There's very little point creating something beautiful if it only feels right for the first couple of weeks.
We'll also look at the practical side of your hair. I'll assess your natural colour, your previous colour history and the condition of your hair, and we'll talk honestly about what's achievable.
If your goal can be reached in one appointment, I'll tell you. If getting there is more of a journey, I'll explain why. Protecting the health of your hair will always come before chasing a result that's unrealistic in a single visit.
I'd much rather you leave with a clear understanding of what's possible than make promises that your hair can't comfortably deliver.
By the end of our consultation, I want you to feel as though everything makes sense.
You'll know why I've recommended a particular approach, how your colour is likely to grow out, how often you'll want to maintain it, and what the longer-term plan looks like if that's something you'd like to have.
Most importantly, I want you to feel heard.
No two consultations are ever the same because no two clients are the same. Your hair has its own history, your lifestyle is unique, and what feels beautiful to you may be completely different to the next person who sits in my chair.
That's why I never believe in rushing this part of the appointment. When we take the time to have a proper conversation, the colour itself becomes so much more than choosing a blonde. It becomes something that's created around you, feels like you, and continues to work beautifully long after you've left the salon.
